I love Disney’s animated movies. In fact, I can’t remember a time where Disney’s classic films weren’t a part of my life in some way. The first movie I remember going to see as a kid was a re-release of “Pinocchio.” After that, I think I begged my parents to take me to every single animated movie Disney ever released. Now I take my kids to every single one when they are released in theaters. My favorite thing about them (besides them being fun and beautifully animated) is that they all tell a story or have a lesson for children and adults alike to learn. Each and every movie has tons of quotes that teach us something about life and love, success and failure. Here are my 5 Fantasic Disney Quotes to Live Your Live By.
“Life’s not a spectator sport. If watchin’ is all you’re gonna do, then you’re gonna watch your life go by without ya.” – Laverne in The Hunchback of Notre Dame
This is a quote I think about pretty often when I find myself doing something that’s not worth my time. Do I really need to binge-watch Game of Thrones while sitting on the couch and doing nothing else? Since the answer to that question is no (I guess!) I decided to give up binge-watching TV shows on the couch. Now I binge-watch them while running on the treadmill and training for runDisney races. Hey, I’m crazy, but I’m not THAT crazy!
“I never look back, darling. It distracts me from the now.” – Edna Mode in The Incredibles
Let’s face it, we all have stuff from our pasts that we’d rather not remember. The problem is, we tend to dwell on the past way too much. Looking forward is a much better way to live. Sure, it’s not always easy to keep looking ahead and not letting ourselves fall into the trap of saying things like “What could have been,” but you can’t change what’s happened. I try to wake up every morning with the mindset of making today just a little bit better than yesterday (unless yesterday was Christmas because let’s face it, nothing is better than Christmas!)
“Just keep swimming.” Dory in Finding Nemo
This one is super popular in the runDisney community and when running in one of the races I constantly see it on shirts, hats, spectator signs, etc. What an awesome message this one is! No matter what is getting you down, no matter what’s happening in your life, you just keep going. When you keep going, things will get better and you’re bound to come out of what has you down in the first place. I can remember running my first marathon in Walt Disney World and really struggling around mile 21. I was in a lot of pain, had a blister on the back of my foot that was getting larger by the minute, and wanted to lie down somewhere. Then I saw one of those “Just Keep Swimming” shirts and it made me laugh and realize that if I just keep going it would all be a little better soon. Of course, it was much better later that night when I was finally in bed, but that’s a story for a different time!
“Even miracles take a little time.” Fairy Godmother in Cinderella
The Fairy Godmother is a smart lady. She understood that even the quickest fix doesn’t happen overnight. I think this is a great quote to live by. Cinderella needs to have her dress fixed, find some type of event transportation to the Ball, and have the prince fall in love with her, and hopes to do it all in an evening. Well, as it turns out, the ultimate payoff, the falling in love part, takes some time. That’s the kind of thing I try to tell myself all the time. I really think if you believe in yourself and commit to something all he way, there is truly no limit to what you can do. Miracles can and do happen every single day, and this quote and the movie Cinderella shows that if we’re patient and hard-working we can all achieve our dreams. Unless we have more than two wicked stepsisters. Then we might be in trouble.
“The only way to get what you want in this world is through hard work.” – Tiana in The Princess And The Frog
One of Disney’s strongest and toughest princesses delivers one of my favorite Disney quotes of all time. Tiana doesn’t wish upon a star to make the dream of her restaurant a reality. She doesn’t wait for a prince to come rescue her from her tough life. She doesn’t get upset that she’s stuck in the predicament that she’s in. No, Tiana decides that if she wants her dream restaurant, she has to work her tail off night and day until she makes that dream a reality. I LOVE this message, especially for young kids that watch this movie. While I love Disney’s fairy tales as much as the next Disney fan, this is the right kind of idea we should be instilling in our young people. You want to reach that dream and get what you’ve always wanted? Work harder! No one is going to give you anything for free and once you realize that, you’ll be a better person for it! Tiana realized it, took on two jobs, got turned into a frog, made her way through swamps, fought scary bad guys, and eventually she got her restaurant. Our paths can’t be much harder than that!
